Fandom Friday: New Summer 2018 Harry Potter Funkos!

SPELL YEAH!! Wave 5 Harry Potter Funkos Are Coming Soon!

This FriYAY just got magically delicious intense. Like Heir of Slytherin face-off, bloodthirsty basilisk rampage and death eaters crashing the Quidditch World intense.

Ok, maybe it’s not that intense. Maybe it’s more like Professor Flitwick crowd surfing the mosh pit of witches and wizards during the Weird Sisters’ concert at the Yule Ball. So boogie down like a Unicorn and let’s dig right into what makes this Friday worth celebrating -- other than um… the weekend--.

Funko, the beauteous, and brilliant designers and purveyors of plastic fandom figurines just announced the latest wave of Harry Potter collectibles. You don’t need to whip out your wand and cast a Revelio charm to see the upcoming Pops and Mystery Minis. The photos and the release date are up on Funko’s official website and on this very blog post for your fangirling/boying pleasure. (Just scroll down!)

Wave 4 was centered around The Prisoner of Azkaban with such standout figurines as Harry wearing his pajamas and holding the Marauders Map, Hermione in her tattered jeans and pink hoodie with her time turner slung around her neck, Professor Lupin in his shabby robes, AND transformed into a werewolf in the Hot Topic exclusive. The Mystery Minis Series 2 came out around the same time as Wave 4 and introduced Harry, Ron and Hermione each on a stool with the Sorting Hat perched on their heads as well as exclusives like Ginny’s Pygmy Puff Arnold (Barnes and Noble), Buckbeak the Hippogriff (Hot Topic) and Sirius in his Azkaban robes (also Hot Topic).

Thiiiiis time around the theme is… The Chamber of Secrets.

There are also a few winks and nods in the new series of Mystery Minis to The Goblet of Fire. But for the most part, Funko is all about Year 2 which this Hufflepuff is hella stoked about. CoS has always been one of my favourite book AND film installments in the Potterverse and I’m so jazzed to see it getting some more love. I’m still stunned at how many Potterheads and bookstagrammers snub the CoS! It’s got one of the most compelling mysteries in the series and introduces who I consider one of the most hilarious side characters: Gilderoy Lockhart!

Flashy and self-absorbed Lockhart is, praise the heavens, finally commemorated as a Funko Pop. Laugh if you will, Mr. Finnigan reader, I’ve wanted a Lockhart for my collection (having a Slughorn moment, #nbd)  from the time I first heard Harry Potter Funkos were coming out.

Time for another Slughorn moment. A lot of this wave is bound to make the shelf. My shelf and I’m willing to bet a Honeyduke’s supply of Chocolate Frogs on it, but your shelf as well.

*muffled weeping* it’s such a bummer that the first 4 and the last 2 especially (I mean really, still no Mr. and Mrs. Weasley?!) weren’t created for this series. I can only keep my fingers crossed that Funko will conjure up some of these as pops or mystery minis in the next magical wave.
